GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Koppies Dam Nature Reserve covers 4 325 ha and surrounds the Koppies Dam on the Rhenoster River. Grassland is interspersed with patches of sweet-thorn along the river. A few game species have been released, including black wildebeest, blesbok, springbok, plain zebra, buffalo and impala. The dam attracts a broad spectrum of waterbirds. Location: North-eastern part of Free State; north-east of Kroonstad. Access: From Kroonstad take the N1 north-wards towards Parys; after approximately 6 km turn right onto the tarred secondary road (R82) to Koppies; turn right again at the town and then left onto a gravel road to the dam. Alternatively, take the toll road to Johannesburg from Kroonstad; take the Koppies turnoff and proceed as above. Accommodation: None. Camping is permitted and there are basic ablution facilities. Other facilities: Game-viewing; boating and fishing (licence required) are permitted) Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 21h00.
